Since updating my 2009 iMac 27″ to El Capitan I have had a very ‘glitchy’ experience in Google Chrome. The window flickers a lot and videos and other media don’t play well. This was unacceptable as it’s my main browser and I don’t want to switch.
Anyway, after some digging around I discovered that it’s the Hardware Acceleration setting that causes this bug, perhaps due to drivers.
- Open Chrome’s settings (⌘,)
- Scroll down and click on “Show advanced settings…”
- Scroll all the way down to “System” (probably at the bottom of the page) and uncheck the “Use hardware acceleration when available” option.
- Restart Google Chrome
Hey presto! Problem solved. I hope this is useful, it’s definitely cheered up my day.
Thanks. I had my Mac in for hardware troubleshooting and it turned out to be Chrome hardware acceleration. Late 2009 iMac
